Understanding Labor Signs: 36 Weeks Pregnant - Braxton Hicks, Cervix & Early Labor

Question
Hi I am 36.6 wks pregnant with my second child and have been having strong braxton hicks and losing my mucus plug for a couple of wks now. The dr has said that my cervix is soft, high, and long. I am 3 cm dialated and am wondering what all this means. I had my first child at 37 wks. Is it likely to have my second early too? What does it mean when the cervix is long? Does it mean that I haven't effaced yet. I have this new dr and I am not that comfortable with him. Thanks for all your help and advice.

Answer
hi caissie,
when they say your cervix is long, it means you are not effaced yet, which isnt uncommon at 36 week gestation. when they say its high it means your cervix hasnt lowered, and come forward, meaning you still have a few weeks left, which of coarse this is totally normal at 36 weeks..give it time...
have a feeling your MD is prepping you to have a scheduled induction. dont do it. wait until your due date. its perfectly ok to even wait until 30-41 weeks until you decide if you want to be induced or not.
inductions are a harder process, on your body and the baby..forcing your body to go into labor, while mostly safe, is higher risk for a cesarean section and fetal distress.
3 cm dilated is fabulous!!!  your on the right track. just dont let your md push you into getting induced would be my suggestion to you!!!
hope this helps,
blessings,
