Understanding Preterm Labor: Cervix Length & What to Expect

Question
Hello, I am 21 weeks pregnant. At 19 weeks I went for a L2 sonogram and they found my cervix to be 1.9 centimeters and 75% efaced.  I was instructed to take 600 miligrams of ibupropen every 6 hours and bed rest.  Last week week I went for a follow up sonogram and they found that my cervix is still at 1.9 centimeters but 50% efaced. For now I am scheduled for follow ups every week to monitor my cervix.
Please explain what this all can mean and have you ever heard of treating a suspected preterm labor with ibuprophen? We  had a misscarriage over 2 years ago and really want this baby...Thank you so much for any information you can offer us. Faby

Answer
HI Faby,
I love your name!! All this means is your cervix, this is what dilates to let the baby thru when it is time to deliver the baby, which in your case is way to early. So to avoid you having a miscarraige they have you on the ibuprofen and bed rest. The only thing we know that ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory/pain reliever, unless you are having pain or inflammation, it really doesn't do alot to prevent labor, here again, call your ob and demand an answer to your question about what is being done with this med and stopping miscarraige. Bed rest keeps you calm and keeps the baby from pressing on the cervix and dilating it. I would continue doing as they tell you to the "t", and keep all your appointments. This is really important. Please let me know what you find out about the ibuprophen, this is really interesting.
