Pregnancy Timeline & Paternity Concerns: Conception Date & Father Identification

Question
QUESTION: me and my partner split from august 30 - october 5.
i slept with another man a few times during september up until maybe the 24th.
i am now pregnant and due july 7th which i got from 2 u/s done at 9 wks and 20 wks.
my periods have always been irregular. i remember bleeding for 2-3 days lightly about the 1st or 2nd of october.

i got back with my partner on oct 5th.
when did i most likely conceive, is there any chance that im not carrying his baby?

ANSWER: With a July 7th due date, you most likely conceived around October 14th which would solidly make it your partner's child. However, whenever there's a question of paternity, I always recommend you go ahead and get a DNA paternity test for the baby just to put everyone's mind at ease and put it to rest for good. Most hospitals and birthing centers (and even now some midwives!) can perform one soon after the baby is born.

Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.

Best wishes,
Helen =)

QUESTION: thanks for your quick response.
but just wondering if there is anyway of conceiving before the LMP date? or if my LMP wasn't an actual period? if it was implantation bleeding would that put my due date back a month?
and based on the info i have supplied are you certain it his my partners child?

very worried for my partner, as he was lied to about paternity in his last relationship, and we having been trying for more than a year.

Answer
You really cannot get pregnant before your LMP. While some people have light periods when they are pregnant, the ultrasounds and other information (hormone levels, fundal height, etc) will point to a more accurate conception.  If it was implantation bleeding- which that would be around the time that it would occur if you had sex on September 25th- then you would be measuring further along than you are (about 2 weeks further along had you gotten pregnant around the end of September/beginning of October). However, if you smoke, your baby may be a smaller size which could throw off the ultrasound and fundal height measurements.

I can't tell you with any certainty that it is your partner's child- I highly recommend you get a DNA paternity test at the child's birth. There is no way of telling for certain if it is your partner's child without the DNA paternity test. Your doctor or midwife may be able to review your hormone levels and history of fundal height to try to determine a more accurate conception date, however, it is always best to have a DNA test if there is any doubt in your mind at all.

Based on what you've told me regarding his past, I recommend coming clean about what happened previously and letting him know that there is a small possibility that the child is not his. Be sure and reassure him that you plan on getting a DNA test at the child's birth and sign up for one when you preregister at the hospital or birthing center (or with your midwife if you're planning a homebirth).

Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.

Best wishes,
Helen =)
