Questioni AM 25 years old. I was in a car accident the beginning of Feb. 2008. I fractured my pelvis in two places in the front (pubic fracture) and in one place in the back. I was non weight berring for 4 weeks on my left leg. I had no surgery because my pelvis did not shift. I went through physical therapy for 2 1/2 months 2 times a week. (part pool therapy and part land therapy) My questions are:
1) My husband and I are wanting to start trying to conceive. What should I expect as far as pain goes?
2) Do my chances of having a c-section increase?
AnswerFirst, I sincerely apologize for not responding sooner! I didn't get notification that I had questions waiting for me until today. I do sincerely apologize- I'm normally much more prompt! =)
Honestly, the pain expectation all depends on you- how much you've healed and your pain tolerance. If you haven't had any problems since you finished physical therapy, there most likely won't be a problem. If you're still concerned, I would contact the doctor who treated you for your fractures and have them check the area to make sure everything has healed properly.
Your chance for a c-section should not increase. However, I would recommend that you consider birthing on your hands and knees rather than on your back (which often happens in hospitals, especially if an epidural is administered). Birthing on your hands and knees will allow more space for the baby to come through and naturally widen your hips. In addition, it will take a lot of pressure off of your pelvis and thus make you a great deal more comfortable during childbirth. I also recommend that you consider a water birth (birthing in a tub) which can also help take pressure off your pelvis and help with any sort of pain or tension.
Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.
Best wishes,
Helen =)
