Early Pregnancy Symptoms: Hot Flashes & Cramps - What to Expect

Question
Hi Helen!

My wife and I are trying for our second child, and we had sex a week ago on her suggested date of ovulation. She charts, so that was the estimated date of it happening. For the past couple days, she has had almost like hot flashes, cause she was actually sweating when I was cold, and then out of nowhere she is fine. Also, last night was very interesting where out of nowhere she got really bad cramps, yet her period is not due for at least another week. I don't remember this happening from the first pregnancy, but could this have happened due to the egg implanting itself? Also, her temp has been up since ovulation as well. One last thing.......would it be time yet to take a pregnancy test, or should we wait a little bit longer? I apologize for all of the questions, but we are just excited.

Thanks,
Josh

Answer
Cramps can definitely happen with implantation. I had implantation cramping with my son (and spotting) which I mistook as my period. So, yes, it definitely is possible. =)

As for the pregnancy test, it may be too soon for even an early result pregnancy test to pick up the result.  A blood test would be able to detect even the smallest amount of HCG but a home urine test may not. I would wait just a few more days and then try an early result test.

I wish you both the best of luck and a positive pregnancy test! =) Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.

Best wishes,
Helen =)
