Understanding Induction: Questions for Your Doctor at 37 Weeks
QuestionI am currently 37 weeks and 2 days, and I see the doctor for my weekly visit tomorrow. I want to ask her if she will induce me next week. I have been having horrible back pain, where it makes it difficult for me to even walk, and I am very uncomfortable. I have not had any problems with my pregnancy thus far. I have been having contractions, but at my last visit was not dilated. Do ou think that she would induce me being 2 weeks early? (I had an unltrasound at the beginning of my pregnancy to figure out my due date)
AnswerBlair,
Unless there is a medical reason such as hypertension, I don't think your doctor should or will induce you at 38 wks. Babies usually come out just fine at 38 wks, but occasionally you get that one babe that doesn't do well at all. It's when we force nature by inducing that you run into problems. I have seen 39 wk babies die because they just weren't ready to come out yet. It is rare, but it happens. I don't think you would want to take that chance just because you are tired of being pregnant. All pregnant women have back pain, have trouble sleeping and are tired. You have come this far and don't want to endanger your baby's life because you are uncomfortable. You may also be setting yourself up for a cesarean section by forcing nature. If your cervix isn't dilated yet, there is a reason for it. Suck it up and continue being the great incubator that you are. Good luck and hang in there.
