QuestionI went into the hospital because i'm having very bad pains in my right side.. the RN didn't even wanan check to see what was causing it because the first RN said she was sure it was just gas.. than the ultrasound tech came in to check the baby and i asked her to see if she could see if anything was wrong she looked at my kidney and said she didn't like what she seen that she was going to have the doctors see what they could do to make me and the baby more comfy.. she did however say the baby was fine she was just worried about me.. the RN's and everyone came in gave me IV's and took blood and said most likely i would be being induced and would be staying they were just waiting on the word from the doctor... the doctor finally came in and said that there was nothing he was going to do about it because i was only dilated to 1 1/2 and that i can just deal with the pain til the baby comes.. i'm in soo much pain it hurts to lay sit walk or even stand.. i can't sleep and it is even hard to breath at times.. i understand that there is going to be pain and everything at the end but i don't understand why he won't help me or why he didn't tell me anything i could do to try and deal with the pain.. he also said the only way the pain is going to go away is if the baby comes.. so i'm really confused on why he wouldn't try to induce me or anything.. can you please give me some kind of information on having an inlarged kidney while being 39 1/2 weeks preganat and what i can do to try and get some rest so i don't stress out and so it doesn't put any stress on my baby.. i'm am super worried about my baby and my health... thank you soo much for you time..
AnswerNicole,
I'm sorry you're so uncomfortable. What your doctor was trying to say is that your body and your baby arent't ready for an induction, meaning it would be likely to fail and end in an uneeded c-section, and is something you want to avoid if at all possible, as it increases the risks to both you and your baby, as well as having permanent repercussions on future pregnancies.
Just because you're 39 1/2 weeks doesn't automatically mean the baby's ready. If it was, you'd be in labor.
Your kidney is most likely enlarged due to the pressure from the baby, which will resolve once the baby is born. If the bloodwork didn't reveal an infection or other such problem, then he's right that it should resolve on its own when the baby is born.
In the meantime, some things you can try to ease the discomfort are lying on your side to take pressure off the kidney, elevating your feet, using hot/cold packs on the sore area, keeping your bladder empty frequently to reduce pressure, eating small meals, and staying hydrated. You should also be able to take regular strength Tylenol or acetaminophen/paracetamol to ease some of the pain.
The good news is that this should be temporary and resolve once the baby is born, which should only be a short while away.
Best,
Catherine
