QuestionHi,My wife(age-26)has a nodeb (size 3 cm) in upper quadrant of left breast (auxillary lumb)just below the arm. she went for open surgical biospy followed by mamogram and ultrasound and pathologist report of remove pus says " its an fibrofatty tissue with spotty necrosis and Impression : shows cystic changes with features of chrnonic mastitis". After surgery doctor says that "some part of node is very hard and he didn't remove that" .
My question is that the part of node he left in body is a lymph node, in future it may create any problem ? And doctor is not giving a clear picture on why he didn't remove that part ?
AnswerIt is difficult to answer questions like yours when I am not the operating surgeon. I know nothing about your wife's health or history.
At the time of the procedure the biopsy is done weighing a couple of factors: First, sfety of the patient; Second, adequate size of the biopsy (are you removing more breast tissue than needed) that will satisfy the clinical need. I will assume your surgeon is ethical and responsible. He or she obviously felt that the biopsy was adequate in a twenty six year old woman with a low risk of cancer when clinically the tissue appeared to have fat necrosis, and did pathologically. It is a judgement call, trust the surgeon. Finally, she will have a scar, but the lumpy area will soften over time.
