Mammograms and Breast Cancer Risk: What You Need to Know
QuestionI had my first mammogram at the age of 30 (i am a Indian). It came normal, but my doctor told me that it was unnecessary for me to be taking mammogram at this age and by taking one i have increased my risk of getting breast cancer.
Is it true that mammogram increase breast cancer risk.? i dont have a first degree relative having breast cancer.
AnswerIn theory there may be a SMALL risk increase BUT that is in general more than compensated by the increased ability of finding breast cancers early. However in your case at your age and with no family history it may not be necessary to do it. The risk of one such examination however is insignificant. Good luck!
