QuestionDear Diane,
I am 17 years old and live in Dubai,U.A.E. I would like to start using the monthly pill but i need adivce as to when and which one. I have never used any type of contraceptive before, hormonal or otherwise. I have PCOS but am not on any medication for it. I get my period every month but the timing is irregular. I just got my period on May 13th and as of today May 18th it is over.In April I had my period sometime between 6th or 7th to 12th or 13th. I am seeing my boyfriend on 16th,17th and 18th of June. On the 21st of June i leave for a trek in the himalayas and come back on july 5th. I then see my boyfriend again from July 8th to August 4th. I would like the pill to be in effect both times that i see my boyfriend but I would prefer it if I didn't have my period while I was on my trek as you can imagine how uncomfortable that may be. The brands of oral contraceptive available in Dubai are Yasmine, Diane, Gynera, Marvelon. Which would be the best for me to start with? And when should i start the pill? Is it necessary to start on the first day of your period or the first Sunday after your period? Online articles all say to start the pill on the Sunday after your period, that would be two days from today. However i calculated and if I start 2 days from now, the pack ends on 9th June which means i am likely to have my period while with my boyfriend (16th-20th)June which i obviously don't want. I figured I could use two packs in a row, but I don't know if that is advisable since this would be my first time using the pill. Also does taking 2 packs have side effects like weight gain or being bloated? If yes, how long does it last?
AnswerDear Riley,
Hope you got my email answering your question. Here is what I sent.
I don't know if you read my answers on allexperts.com but I don't recommend any kind of hormonal birth control methods. I feel that there are side effects and risks in taking hormones and altering your natural period. And if you were on the pill anyway, I don't recommend taking 2 packs in a row. I have had many stories from women about what happens when you do that. In fact, I just got an email from a young lady who said she's been bleeding for over 2 weeks and can't get it to stop. So that concerns me and then other stories as well.
Also, ECP can be harmful and/or dangerous. If you're not pregnant and then you take that, you can cause problems with your natural cycle. Also, if you are pregnant, then it causes an abortion. Read the article on http://www.optionline.org and then click on morning after pill. Read that and then write back and tell me what you think. I''m not sure if I answered all your questions so get back to me.
