Birth Control & Protection: Understanding Backup During Sugar Pill Weeks
QuestionDear Dianna,
I have been on birth control for over a year. I am taking the Ortho Cyclen 28 day pack, so, as you know, 21 pills are blue, and 7 are green. My question is, when I am done with the blue pills, and I begin the green, where is my protection against getting pregnant? There are three days, before my period comes, that I am not taking a pill with any birth control in it, as the green pills are just sugar pills. What are the chances of getting pregnant during these days? Is there an egg to be fertilized at this time? Could you explain to me the stages of a woman's ovaries/menstrual cycle with each weeks' pills? How does birth control even work in relation to my fallopian tubes?
Please educate me!
AnswerMost of your questions are ones that you need to talk to your doctor about. I don't know a lot about the exact science of what makes the pill work. I do know that you are protected while on the non active pills. So you don't have to worry about that. Talk toyour doctor about the other questions though.
