QuestionI ordinarily take Ovcon 35 to regulate my period (they are otherwise both irregular and extremely painful, and prevent me from going to school/work). Anyway, I hadn't taken it for the past few months but, after about three months, finally had a period. I began taking the pills again afterward, but I forgot to take one about four days into the pack. I didn't take two the following day, when I realized what had happened, because I didn't want to get sick. I thought that since I had just had a period, that I wouldn't bleed or--if I did--the bleeding would be light. Since I am not concerned with pregnancy prevention, that scenario was fine with me. I took one pill at my normal time the following evening, and woke up the next morning bleeding! It has not tapered off almost a week later. In fact, now there are now clots. The blood is bright red, but not particularly heavy, so I think I am just continually bleeding. I didn't experience any sort of breakthrough bleeding a few years ago when I began taking the pills, and have never before bled if I forgot to take one. Is this normal? What is causing this? What can I do to stop it? If I go to the doctor, could they give me something, or are they going to tell me to wait for it to stop on its own...god knows when? I am at college right now, and my regular doctor is far away. I don't want to blow $150.00 at Planned Parenthood if all they are going to tell me is to "ride it out".
AnswerThe pill doesn't heal anything. The problems you are having are a result of taking a steroid hormone that alters your normal health and wellbeing. I would search high and low for natural and healing solutions for your painful periods. Irregular periods are not an illness and generally resolve themselves as you get older.
I don't know what PP would do but I would just wait it out and hopefully, quit taking the pill so your normal cycles will settle into their normal pattern. Bleeding at the wrong times is certainly a side effect and a problem from taking the pill. If you stop taking it, it should go away and not come back - unless you have caused more damage to your health by taking the pill.
Have you read the package insert? Those side effects are not just something that happens to someone else.
