Birth Control Effectiveness: Pregnancy Risk During Pill-Free Days

Question
Hello!
My period always comes a few days after I have taken the last
pill for that cycle, and I was wondering am I at risk of getting
pregnant during those three or so days between the last pill and
the period?  I just want to be absolutely sure, rather than sitting
and speculating with my boyfriend about it all the time...thanks!

Answer
Hi Len,

Your protected during those days. Thats the short answer.

BCP work on hormones. They keep your body from ovulating when it should, usually between days 10 and 16, it varies from woman to woman. Also, if you should ovulate, and the egg is fertilized, BCP keep your body from building up the lining it normally would to need to sustain a pregnancy. Thats what the active pills do. The inactive pills stop the hormones so you can have your period. Once it's time for your period, there is no risk of ovulation since that time has passed, and no risk of pregnancy because your body id preparing for the period. Simply put, your 3 weeks of active pills keep you from getting pregnant during the week of inactive pills. So your protected that week as well.

Hope that answers your question. Thanks,

Drea Jean
