Delaying Your Period While on Alesse: A Guide for Brides

Question
I am getting married at the end of August and I am due to get my period right when my honeymoon starts. I have been on "Alesse" Oral Contraceptives for 8 years. I have never missed a period before and I am really wanting to delay the onset of my period for a week but I am not sure how to do it.

Should I wait an extra week before I start taking my pill again after my next period, or should I just start my pills as soon as this months menstral cycle starts? Any suggestions?

thanks!

Answer
Hi Aly,

You've got a few months to try to change your cycle, so you have picked a good time, and may be able to fix it.

Either option may work for you. And I will give you the pros and cons of each.

Waiting a week after your period, will up your pregnancy risk for that pill pack, so if you go that way, you'll need to use a back up method for the duration of the pill pack to avoid pregnancy. Going this route, may mean your period will start before you get to the sugar pills. If it does that, you will continue them as normal, and also continue to use a back up method. After that month, your period will likley adjust, and by August it should be back to normal.

Starting a new pack as soon as your period starts, should not up your pregnancy risk, and will be more likley to change your period a little sooner than the other way. It may be a little later than usual the next time, or you may miss it altogether. By the following month, it should be on the track you want it on.

In either case, don't be suprised if the day it starts alters a little more than expected, or it is a little heavier or lighter than normal. You may also be more likley to have spotting or break through bleeding. If I had a choice, I'd go for the second option, as it should work faster, and also protect you.

Now, if you try this, and nothing has changed by August, you can do a back to back pill pack. Instead of starting the sugar pills, you start a new pack right away. This will delay your period, but it often times messes up a cycle, and its hard to get back on track, so you should only do this as a last resort.

Hope that helps you make a desicion! Thanks, and Congratulations on your upcoming marriage!
