Post-Abortion Period: What to Expect After Medication & Birth Control

Question
QUESTION: Hi. I had an abortion Sept.13 (i took the pill) i started bleeding after 2 hours..two weeks later i went for my final check and the doctor told me that everything was fine and i even got the birth-control shot that same day.  it been 7 weeks from the last day that i havent had my period. But in the first or second week of October i was spotting just for a few days like 4 days straight. Is that normal that my period is taking that long??

ANSWER: Hi, Lucia,

You have flooded your body with powerful hormones. First, the medical abortion does this. A woman is supposed to take one medication at first, and then this should be followed by a second medication 2-3 days later. And both are powerful. Also, you didn't tell me if you had any contractions or cramps, or how much you bled. Nor did you tell me how far along you were when you took these medications. All of that could be very important.

And then after that, you had the birth control shot.

I wouldn't begin to guess what all of that did to your delicate hormonal balance. Nobody can diagnose your problem over the internet, not even a doctor. So I recommend you go to a different doctor and ask him to check you and test your hormones. I think that's really the only thing you can do at this point to get to the bottom of this.

It's not clear from your description whether you started bleeding after the first course of pills, or the second. You will need to ask your doctor about this as well.

QUESTION: Thank u for responding fast. I appreciate it.. About what I did. On da 12 of Sept. I took da first step which I took by mouth the pill then the next day at home I had to insert 3 or 4 pills (I don't really remember but I think it was 3 pills).. From that time it passed 2 hours that I started with fainfull cramps n started heavy bleeding and the first thing that came out which iam pretty sure was the embryo because when I went to the bathroom and I saw it on the pad.. For the rest of the 7 days that I lasted bleeding a lot and with  really bad cramps that I didn't even know what to do if to stand up or sit cause of the pain I was going through.. And then like I told you from last month on the beginning of October I was spotting for few days.. But I feel fine and I haven't noticed nothing different..  Amybe like you said I gave my body too many things.. I just hope to get my period soon ...

Answer
Lucia,

Thank you for the additional detail. It was helpful.

I don't understand why they instruct women to insert pills that way. It's really dangerous. There are a couple of ways that can kill a woman. I am glad you are doing as well as you are, but we need to warn women not to do this.

The pain was partly due to the fact that the drug used can cause contractions so severe they can actually rupture a woman's uterus. And there is no way to control how much effect they have.

If you are pretty sure you saw the embryo, then it would sound more like messed up hormones. I think your best recourse is to go to a different doctor and have him check you out thoroughly. Good luck, and let me know what you find out.
