Fertility After Stopping Birth Control: Conception Timeline & Safety

Question
QUESTION: I am 19 years old. I was regular on OCP "Loette" from June 2006 to March 3, 2007. On March 4 & March 5, I missed my pills. My previous period started on Feb 22nd 2007. I found slight bleeding(not actually periods) from March 6th till March 18th. The bleeding has now stopped and we are having unprotected sex from that point onwards without having any contraceptive measure.
1) How long will it take to conceive now?
2) Is it safe to conceive now?

ANSWER: It usually takes a bit of time for your body to become accustomed to being off the pill. After that, pregnancy will happen for eight of ten couples within one year. It is safe to try to become pregnant.

QUESTION: Dear Mr. Kambic,
Thanks a lot for the response.
In continuation with the above question, I have not have my periods since Feb 22nd.
1) Does that indicate I am about to conceive or usually the periods take this longer to happen.

Regards,
Mona Chopra
ANSWER: It can take sometime for your body to return to regular cycling after coming off the pill. My wife and I recommend that women learn to monitor their fertility which you can do by taking classes. Check http://www.irh.org/nfp.htm

Your body will tell you what is happening and you will feel better for it.

QUESTION: My period started on 25 april .after periods how long will it take to conceive?

Answer
The answer below is the same as one I gave to another person.

Let me answer in two parts. First when 100 couples try to get pregnant, no pills, no birth control, at the end of a year 80 will be pregnant. Some get pregnant the first month, some the second month, etc. It is impossible to predict which couple will get pregnant when. The 20 couples not pregnant after a year are considered infertile and usually go for medical help. You can't tell where you are until you try.

Now second, coming off the pill is similar. Some women return to normal cycling with no problem, others take sometime to resume normal cycling. You can't predict what will happen because as you say, all women are different.

So putting the two issues together, coming off the pill, first you will have to resume a "normal" cycle, then you will have to try to get pregnant. I suggest monitoring fertility will increase your understanding of all this and your confidence that your body is working correctly. Check http://www.irh.org/nfp.htm

Be sure to try to get a teacher to work with you until you really understand your fertility.
