Understanding Birth Control Methods & Hormonal Effects

Question
Hello,
My Fiance and I are getting married soon, so naturally I'm wondering about birth control methods.  We've done a lot of research and found that statistically the Implanon and The shots have the most effectiveness for preventing unwanted pregnancy.

My fiance is extremely irregular and has bad painful periods (moreso than most women I know).  How, if at all, will these hormones given by these birth control methods specifically affect her. I don't want her to get physically damaged by this just because we don't want to have kids yet.  We're also kinda against condoms just cause of what we've heard (statistically they're not that great and you lose some feeling).

Please advise in this instance what you'd prescribe.  Thanks!

Answer
I am not a physician and do not prescribe. I am an epidemiologist and understand how birth control works and how well it works. In my opinion your fiance and you need to discuss your question with her gyn. What you describe as irregularity and painful periods is something that needs medical assessment and consultation prior to discussion of contraceptive methods.
