Vivelle Dot: Understanding Birth Control & Hormone Replacement

I have recently been kicked off my parents' insurance plan due to my age (22) and now have no way to get my prescribed birth control (not only do I have irregular periods and intense cramps, but I am also in a relationship and would like to prevent pregnancy)

A well meaning friend contacted her gynecologist-Aunt and hooked me up with a bag of free samples. the samples she gave me were of the Vivelle Dot. A quick google search seems to be telling me that these are simply estrogen supplements. Do these have an alternative use as birth control? If the internet is correct this seems to be a medication for menopausal women -- should be taking this if I am in my early twenties? And, if this is not a form of bc should I still continue to take it if it will help with my period regularity and cramping?

Hi Julia,
I think someone made a mistake in giving you Vivelle Dot.  This is an estrogen replacement for menopausal women, and will not provide birth control.  I don't think it will do help your period irregularity and cramping.  I would suggest Planned Parenthood for your birth control pills, or some other neighborhood clinic that will provide pills at lower rates depending on your income.
