NuvaRing Delayed Insertion: Protection Concerns & Backup Methods

Question
I've been using NuvaRing for about 4 months. I took out my ring on the proper day after 3 weeks. I had my period. Yesterday at 9pm I was supposed to put a new one in, but I forgot. I ended up putting it in today at about 3:30pm. Almost a day later than the 7 days. Am I still protected?! And if not, how long do I need a back up method? This is urgent, please help! I'm so worried.
Thanks,

Answer
Hello Carolyn,

I'm not a medical doctor but thanks for your question. As usual, I have to advise you to see your own physician. I don't recommend the NuvaRing or any hormonal contraceptives because of side effects to your health. However, I did read an article which said that if you have the ring out longer than 3 hours (which you had out for almost a day) you need to use back-up contraception for at least 7 days. So this is my advice to you except I would advise to use non-hormonal methods if you really need to be on birth control at all. Please email me at DCHERYL51@yahoo.com to let me know what happens or just talk more.

Sincerely,
Diane Cheryl
