Post-Pill Headaches: Causes, Symptoms & When to See a Doctor

Question
I am 40 and my husband and I have decided to have another baby before I get to old. I have a 2 year old daughter and have been back on birth control pills for a year now, I just recently stopped them my last cycle.  I have found that I have had headaches everyday since.  What could be the reason for this? Should I see my Doctor? I have had some dizzy spells but they only last a few seconds, could it be the lack of hormones??

Thanks
Christine

Answer
Hi Christine,

Headaches and some dizziness are common side effects of both starting and stopping the pill. Your body is adjusting back to your non-pill hormonal levels . It could take a couple of months, but these side effects should subside once your body has adjusted. If the headaches and dizziness are minor then I think it is fine for you to wait a few weeks. If either side effects worsen, you continue to get them after about a month or so, or you become concerned about them for any reason, give your doctor a call.

I hope this helps. If you have further questions, let me know.
