Myrena IUD Removal: Understanding the Process & Options
QuestionI have had the Myrena IUD in place for 10 months now. I have done wonderful with it but wish to try for another baby soon. I lost my insurance so I am not able to see a Dr. for removal of the IUD. Is there any way I can remove it myself? I know it's not recommended but I'm sure I can do so if I knew what direction to go in. My sister is a nurse as well. thanx so much!
AnswerIf you have ever felt your cervix, that's where you'd look for the string. At the top of your vagina the cervix is firm like your nose. It has a dimple in the middle, which is the opening, where the string will be. It's not easy to grab the string because it will slip through your fingers. We grab it with a forceps, which makes it easy. If you can get hold of the string it's just a matter of pulling it straight toward the vaginal opening. There will be a cramp as it comes out, and it needs a firm pull. The hard part is first finding it without using a speculum to see it, and then getting hold of it to pull it out. Since your sister is a nurse, she may have an easier time both reaching it and grasping it. If she could get a speculum and forceps, then it's easy. Good luck.
