Depo-vera at 50: Benefits, Risks, and Long-Term Use

Question
QUESTION: Dear Diane,
I think I have been on Depo for about 15 years.I have had no problems while on this, no bleeding which I love, and perhaps a little weight gain and 2 years ago my GP sent me for a bone density scan which I passed with flying colours. My concern is that I am now 50 years and 3 months and when I queried with my GP at my age do I really need to stay on this and he said " yes for a few more years".
Why would he want me to still stay on Depo at my age ??

ANSWER: Hi Pamela,

May I ask you a question? Are you sexually active and need to be on depo provera for birth control? Also, do you think you are in menopause. I'm not sure about that since you said you have no bleeding. I don't know how you would tell if you were done with your periods if you don't have periods. I always believe in the natural way that our bodies work. So I don't ever recommend any kind of hormonal birth control methods.

I'm not a medical doctor so I would say that you should ask your own GP this question of why you should be on depo. Please let me know what he says as I am really interested. You may email me at DCHERYL51@yahoo.com and hope to hear from you soon.

QUESTION: Dear Diane,
Thank-you.Yes I am still sexually active ( Married 22 years) )
I had thought at my age falling pregnant was impossible, or
should I say highly unlikely and that was why I queried why I was still using Depo. As for menopause I have no symptons whatsoever although I know my mother and sister did.I do go back to my GP early April so I will ask him again why I am still taking it and let you know his reply.
Many thanks, Pamela

Answer
Hi again Pamela,

Thanks for answering me so quickly. Did you ever have any children? Just curious. You could still be fertile I guess. I started having menopause about your age or maybe a year before that. I have heard of women still getting pregnant. But yes, you should ask your doctor and I would love to know the answer. You can email me privately at DCHERYL51@yahoo.com so would hope to hear from you.

Sincerely,
Diane Cheryl
