QuestionHi Doctor, So i had my 3 week check up this past saturday. But I am still bleeding. I started birth control the day of my abortion. Does that have something to do with it?
AnswerHello, chris,
First of all, please know that I am not a doctor. I am simply someone who has done a lot of research and talked to hundreds of women.
You didn't tell me what kind of abortion you had. So I will have to answer for both of the common types.
With a medical abortion, bleeding heavily for weeks is actually quite common. If you're not bleeding heavily, at least you are doing better than some. I don't know what you can do about it. I also don't know if using birth control has any bearing on it. Medical abortions can cause damage to the uterus. In fact, sometimes they cause such strong contractions they can rupture the uterus, so it's not hard to figure out that lesser damage to the uterus is possible, even likely.
With a surgical abortion, it suggests that you were injured in some way. The abortionist is operating blind with a very sharp instrument on some soft tissue, and damaging the uterus is common. He also has to force open the cervix, which causes microtears, and that could be a source of bleeding.
I recommend you go see a doctor. Not even a doctor can tell you the reason why you are bleeding, over the internet.
I hope that your body soon returns to some semblance of normal. Stay safe!
