Irregular Periods & Severe Cramps: Is Birth Control Pills Right for Me?

Question
I first started my period when I was 12. I am now 18. For the past year it has been super irregular and I get unbearable cramps to the point where its hard to function. Emotionally, I am really up and down. It wasn't like this until the past year. It also went from lasting 8 days to 4. Is the pill my best bet? How should I go about getting it? Me and my mom aren't very close so talking to her about it isnt really an option. Thanks

Answer
Yes, I think the pill is your best bet.  It will usually get rid of cramps or make them much milder.  It also evens out your hormones, which may help your emotions.  You need to get a prescription, either from a doctor or someplace like Planned Parenthood or a neighborhood clinic.  They'll give you more information about taking it as well.  Best wishes.
