Understanding Pregnancy Risk While on Birth Control: A Comprehensive Guide

Question
Hi my name is Courtney. I'm 17 and i have been on the pill for 2 months now. My boyfriend and i have had unprotected sex during the past month and he has ejaculated in me. I have not been taking the pills on time regularly but most of the time i do. i have had bad nausea for the past week but i have not thrown up and it comes only in the morning and at night. i find myself going to the bathroom more then usual and i have been moody plus my breasts are really sore. i was due to get my period today 7-1-09 but it did not come, and i had some spotting a few days ago and it was pink with a brown color. i took a pregnancy test 4 days ago and i know that is a little early and it came out negative. i am not sure if i am pregnant or not but could you please give me some advise? thank you

Answer
Hey, you must be very scared.

If you're on the pill, you only have a 1% chance of being pregnant, but it does happen, and not taking the pills on time doesn't help (not blaming you though, stuff happens!)
Now that you have missed your period, do another pregnancy test. They don't really give an accurate result untill a period has been missed. Your symptoms don't sound too good, but it is very rare to get pregnant on the pill.
My advice is to do another pregnancy test now. Feel free to ask follow up, I know what teenage pregnancy is like, so I'll be with you every step.
