Ovulation and Birth Control: Understanding Fertility While on the Pill

Question
Hi, I am 35 years old and I have a 4 month old (as well as a 5,8, and 10 yr old. I seem to be 'overfertile') I began taking Necon a month ago. I started it on a Thursday while still on my period, I had been told to start it while on my period because it takes 7 days to be effective anyway. I begin bleeding 2 days before the placebo pills so I stopped the pill for my period. 6 days after stopping the pill, I ovulated. I know because I have pretty easy to read signs, I get cramp like twinges in my overies, I get overtired and moody, and my mucus went from thin and runny to all of a sudden thick and chunky about 30 min after the cramps.
We had sex about 5 hours earlier and I am worried about becoming pregnant. Why would I ovulate on that pill? I read it is a good one. And today, 4 days later, I had a bit of pink blood on my tissue and I am afraid it may be implantion bleeding. Oh, after I ovulated I didn't take the pill agian and we are using back up protection. (we are pro-life and if the sperm and egg do meet I dont want to prevent it from attatching). I know I am very fertile, we have never had sex while ovulating and not get pregnant. I even missed a day on my pills once before and became pregnant with my second son.
I just don't understand what I did wrong this time. I didnt miss a day, but I did take the pill at 7am some days and noon other days, could this cause me to ovulate? Or maybe it was starting it while on my period? Or maybe ending a day early due to starting my period? I would think all those would be ok but I am looking for something I did wrong. What are the chances of me being pregnant in your opinion? Thank you so much for your time, it is appreciated.

Answer
Hi Amy,

It sounds like you are very fertile.  I would say that for the average woman the chance of being pregnant is small, but that may not be true for you.  I'm not sure if you stopped 1 or 2 pills too early, but I think that's the only thing you might have done wrong.  Women almost never ovulate on the pill as long as they take the pill for at least 21 days and don't go off for more than 7 days.  I think you may have ovulated because you hadn't taken the pill for the full 21 days.  Necon is a good pill, as good as the rest.  For the average couple having sex at ovulation, chance of pregnancy is only 20-25%.  It sounds like it's higher for you, but I think there's still a good chance that you didn't get pregnant.  A pregnancy test will usually be positive 2 weeks after conception, so you could wait about 16 days and test.  If the test is negative, I don't think you're pregnant.  Good luck.
