Contraceptive Implant Side Effects: Heavy & Prolonged Bleeding - What to Do?

Question
hi i received the contraceptive implant almost 5 weeks ago and have just had my first period which was extremely heavy and inconvenient. i am now also continuingly bleeding and havent been able to be with my boyfriend sexually for almost 6 weeks now and its becoming stressful. i am just wondering what i can do to have the bleeding stopped completely? or should i get the implant removed? and if i do will the bleeding stop immediately or not?

Answer
Irregular bleeding is the most common side effect of Implanon.  It usually gets better over time.  In your case, taking birth control pills for about a week will probably be helpful.  I would talk to your doctor about that.  Having the implant removed won't necessarily stop the bleeding completely.  I think it will help, but probably not immediately.
