Placental Fold: Understanding Risks & Next Steps
Questionmy date of my last menstrual period was 28th December and i am due on the 4 october. My question is i seen my midwife yesterday and my placenta appears to have a fold in it. She has sent me for another ultrasound in 2 weeks and told me my placenta could be harmful for my baby as a limb may get caught and no other information was given other than this. could u please tell me some more information and ways to treat this. much appreciated.
AnswerIf a fold is seen in the placenta, it could mean that you have a possible separation of the placenta. This can cause bleeding if doesn't resolve on its own. It does not cuase injury to a limb. However, heavy bleeding may lead to an early cesarean section. There is nothing to do about it. As long as you are not having heavuy bleeding, just follow up with sonograms. If you start bleeding, now, there is nothing you can do until you reach, at least 28 weeks gestation (July 15). I would suggest that you discuss this with your obstetrician, not your nurse midwife.
