Rick Warren's Inauguration Speech: Examining the Controversy

Question
HI. My question is what do you think of President Barack Obama's decision to ask Rick Warren to speak at his inauguration? Pastor Warren is fervently anti abortion, and even compared abortion to the Holocaust. He also believes that women should submit to their husbands, and should not be in positions of authority over men. I am surprised and disappointed, because I always believed Obama to be a feminist and supporter of a woman's right to choose. He hasn't even taken office yet, and already he is breaking his promises. I remember hearing the sentiment that all politicians are liars who will promise you the sun and the moon and tell you whatever you want to hear to get into office expressed on more than one occassion in the months proceeding the election, and I said "Oh no, Obama is different! You'll see". Boy, do I feel like a fool.

Joanne

PS: RIck Warren isn't the only anti abortion person who has made the comparison between abortion and the Holocaust. Why do they do this? Surely even one who believed abortion was murder would see the difference between the two.

Answer
Hi Joanne :)

I was incredibly disappointed and still am. Even thought it was Congress who chose him, I wish Obama would turn down the offer. Or that Congress wouldn't have chosen him in the first place! What the hell were they thinking?! Of anyone they could have selected..."Let's pick someone really ignorant, sexist, and homophobic. Rick Warren!!!"
All I can say is don't lose hope for Obama yet. He is planning to repeal the Global Gag Rule and urge the passage of the Freedom of Choice Act (which would make my YEAR). However, Warren being there is really, really unnecessary. And I just am keeping my fingers crossed they renounce him.

It's so incredibly offensive to those who suffered and died in the Holocaust, the survivors, and the families of the deceased and survivors. It just highlights how ignorant they are. Since anti abortion people have no facts whatsoever on their side, they have to appeal to people's emotions. Comparing something to the Holocaust will no doubt create a bad reaction. So that's why I think they compare the too. And these people have proven time and time again they don't care how offensive and untrue something is. It's just a means to an end for them.
