QuestionHi. My last period was July 22, 2009. I had my appointment Saturday, Sept 5 and after having my lab and ultrasound, meeting with a counselor and discussing my options, chose Abortion Pill. (I had already educated myself on the Abortion Pill and was confident this option suited me best even prior to my appt). I took Mifeprex in the clinic that same day at 1pm. I went home and felt fine other than a mild headache, took the prescribed antibiotics with food as directed and went on with my normal activities. The next day, Sunday, I noticed I had bled slightly overnight. I ate breakfast, took 1 pain + 1 nausea pill as prescribed, waited 15-20 minutes and then proceeded to insert the Misoprostol bucally at approximately 10am. I waited 30 minutes for the tablets to dissolve, and swallowed the remaining medication with water. I started feeling the cramps coming almost immediately after the 30 minutes, they started out mild and became extremely intense within an hour. By the 2nd hour I felt very nauseous and vomited once. I had started to bleed moderately at this time. The cramps came in a pattern of intense pain and then slight relief for a minute or two. I was told I could take up to 2 pain pills every 4-6 hours, so having taken only 1 earlier, decided to take another pain pill. I tried to walk around as much as possible, this did help reduce the cramps somewhat, but the pain medication made me extremely sleepy and I ended up sleeping for 2-3 hours, waking up a few times in between. I was still bleeding moderately and noticed a couple small clots, but no big clots. The cramps lasted approximately 6 hours. After 4pm they started to subside, still bleeding but nothing more than a heavy period, still no large clots. Today is Tuesday, Sept 8 and I am not experiencing any symptoms except for the moderate bleeding. I'm trying to walk around the house as much as I can, as I've noticed this helps bring more out. I'm worried since I haven't seen any large clots the pill was unsuccessful. I was very early in my pregnancy, 4-5 weeks. I called the doctors and they didn't seem very concerned, but I did move up my follow up appointment from 2 weeks to 1 week. Does my experience sound normal? Effective? When is the soonest time I'd know if this worked or not?
AnswerHi Sarah :)
There's ALWAYS a chance that the pregnancy tissue wasn't removed. But by what you've experienced, you wouldn't be able to tell. At 4-5 weeks, large clots wouldn't need to be passed, the pregnancy is so tiny. Your experience does sound normal-some women bleed more than others, some have more pain, some pass huge clots, some don't. What you've gone through provides nothing to worry about-as long as you don't have any bad side effects, the worst that can happen is they have to suction the tissue out at another appointment, but all sounds well.
