Cervical Dilation After Laminaria Insertion: What Happens If You Change Your Mind?

Question
I wanted to know, if you are scheduled for a 2 day surgical abortion procedure, and they have inserted the laminaria to dilate the cervix, what can be done if you change your mind the following day? can they remove the laminaria and how ould they contract the cervix back to normal? Is it even possible to change your mind afterwards?

Answer
My first advice to you is to contact your clinic and ask them. They are the ones who are best informed about your specific situation, and will be able to help you best.

To the best of my knowledge, unless this is very early in your pregnancy (4-5 weeks), there should be no problems in changing your mind at this stage because the laminaria by itself is not harmful to the pregnancy. Even if the pregnancy is very young, there is only a small chance of a spontaneous miscarriage occurring due to the dilated cervix. The cervix will go back to normal within about 10 days, and the only thing you need to do is take care not to insert anything at all into your vagina during this time. No tampons, no vaginal sex even with condoms, no douches, no baths (showers are ok), no swimming etc.

However, the effects of other medication that you are taking (like antibiotics), or the type of antiseptic that was applied to your cervix, may affect the health of your fetus. This depends on your clinic, and only they will have this information. You should definitely contact them for more information regarding this, because I am not a medical professional.
