Post-Abortion Vaginal Discharge & Odor: What to Expect

Question
Hi, Im new to this but Ive seen your site many times and it seems like you know what your doing and your doing it great =].

I got an suction abortion on may 4. I was 6 weeks, after the procedure I was fine I bled only that day and I spotted for a couple of days which was normal. But now I have vaginal discharge and the smell really bothers me I just want to know if I'm OK or should be worried.?

Answer
Dear Lilly,
A discharge with a foul odor is common and normal with pregnancy. It is called bacterial vaginosis, and it is an overgrowth of NORMAL bacteria (not a sexually transmitted disease).  It can be scary because the odor can be quite intense.  You can either wait and see if it goes away on its own.  You can also take antibiotics to make it go away more quickly.  Flagyl, or metronidazole, is the most common antibiotic that is prescribed for this.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
