QuestionGood day Pat G.
I need all the help I can get right now. Three days ago, I had an intercourse with my boyfriend. I was on the third day of my period, (which in my case is normally the last day of menstruation). We got carried away as that was our first time, and we thought it would be safe thinking I cant get pregnant if sex is done during menstruation. Later that night, i made my research and I found out i could actually get pregnant. And it scared me. I dont wanna get pregnant, i dont wanna get an abortion either. so i thought, just before the sperm and egg could meet up in my body, i could take some drugs that induces menstruation and get rid of the sperm left in my repro system.
My boyfriend's sister took provera since she had an irregular cycle. She was able to bleed after taking the drug, (under a doctor's prescription). Today, i took the same, 10mg of it. thinking it would induce menstruation. but i just read tonight that it doesnt at all stop the ovulation.
My boyfriend and I are so confused right now. Please do help us... What do i need to take, i think i need some drugs just to get rid of the sperm in my cervix. We dont want to have an abortion, and i just cant get pregnant.
Please help..
AnswerGood day, MJ,
It wasn't a good idea to take drugs. These can mess up your body. And they don't "get rid of the sperm" before they meet up with an egg. That's not how these drugs work anyway. They work by preventing ovulation or implantation (in that case, it's an early abortion). They don't act on sperm that I know of.
I'll explain things a little bit, and I think it will help. Normally a woman ovulates 14 days before her next period begins (or is supposed to begin, if she becomes pregnant). While it is possible to get pregnant during your period, it's not common. It would mean that you would have a cycle less than three weeks in length. So unless you do, it's not likely. The thing that confuses people is that it is possible to bleed for other reasons, and a woman might interpret that as a period.
In order to get pregnant, you have to have fertile mucus. This is required to allow the sperm to travel to your Fallopian tubes, where fertilization occurs. Fertile mucus is clear and slippery and stretches like a raw egg white. You can learn more here:

I recommend that to set your mind at ease, you don't have any more sex. It's just too risky if you want to avoid pregnancy and abortion. And you really need someone who will cherish you to become that intimate anyway. Sex is more than just an experience of pleasure. It causes bonding, especially for the woman, because it releases hormones that cause bonding. But the emotional situation is just too confused for it to be a good time for sex. It can also compromise your future in other ways as well.
Now if you continue to have sex, pregnancy is probably inevitable, even if you use "protection". So if you don't want that risk, you know how to avoid it. If you do become pregnant, please don't have an abortion. Abortions are dangerous, and if you don't want one, you shouldn't have one. There are organizations in the Philippines that will help you if necessary. And I should be here (I don't plan to go away) if you need help. But be prudent. Work on developing your relationship in other ways if you think this might be a good man for marriage.
You deserve better. You deserve a man who will cherish you before you give this precious gift. A man who cherishes you won't put you at risk before your relationship is committed.
Let me know how you do, and please take care of yourself.
