Persistent Positive Pregnancy Test After Medical Abortion: What Could It Mean?

Question
QUESTION: I had a Medical abortion, (pills) 5 weeks and 1 day ago. Since then I have had a brown discharge. Worse after sex. We have had unprotected sex, (meaning him pulling out and mostly condoms) since one week after the abortion, but mostly condoms and Always him "pulling out."
I took a pregnancy test and it is positive. I have taken several and they all say positive.
What does this discharge mean?
What does the positive result mean? Can it still be from the abortion from 5 full weeks ago?
I am praying that we are not pregnant again, as I am planning on calling off our engagement. This is a very difficult time.
I just have no idea what is going on with this discharge and now, positive pregnancy tests!

Please please Help!

ANSWER: Hello, sam,

There are some important facts that you haven't explained to me. I need to know which pills you took. Did you take one kind of pills, or two? How far along were you? Pulling out doesn't work, by the way. Neither do condoms.

The discharge means that your uterus is still bleeding, but the fact that it's brown means it's old blood. When you have sex and that stimulates the bleeding, it means that sex causes your uterus to contract. You could easily still be pregnant.

I am sorry about your difficulties. I will just ask you not to make it worse by harming your body. The pills used for pill abortions are dangerous. They can seriously harm or kill you. Some of the pills are not supposed to be used by pregnant women at all. The manufacturer says so.  They are medications for stomach ulcers! Surgical abortions are harmful, too. If you want details, please let me know.

If you are planning on breaking off your engagement, don't give the man access to your body anymore. It only complicates the situation.

You will probably need some counseling, and you may need resources. Also, you may want to talk to someone about what to do about the issues of custody and child support. Also, you could use to find out what your options are in general, because if you are still pregnant, you have another decision to make. You can find an organization near you where you can get this kind of help. You can also talk to them by email and on the phone. Go here:

QUESTION: I was 8 weeks along in the pregnancy. I had a Medication abortion 5 weeks ago. A medication abortion is the pill abortion.
After the initial bleeding and clotting passed, my discharge turned brown. It is still brown. Not a lot of discharge but everytime I go to the bathroom the is the brown dry blood.
I can't get an appointment(within the next few weeks), and I can't afford an emergency room.
At my follow up appointment, two weeks after the abortion, they said my uterus looked fine.
I was still having the discharge, but it has continued! When will it stop?
Is the pregnancy test positive because of 'leftover' hormones? Or am I pregnant again?
Does the brown discharge have anything to do with this?
PS- I had to have the abortion. Not allot of choice. I take medication for depression and anxiety that causes horrible birth defects and, although I am tapering off of this medication, it is still not safe to me or a baby to be pregnant.
I don't know what my body is telling me with this 'dried blood'?
They gave me an Ultra Sound, 2 weeks after the abortion, and they said everything looked clear.
The discharge does not smell 'funky'
But, sometimes the discharge is different consistencies.

ANSWER: Hi again, sam,

OK, to begin with, eight weeks is too late for a pill abortion. It won't work at that point.

Emergency rooms have to treat you, whether you have money or not. But you can also get a decent doctor who may donate his time. There are organizations that can provide these referrals. To find one, go here:

As for the medication, although it may cause birth defects, it also may not. They err on the side of caution with these things. That's not to say you had no chance, but they're not painting an accurate picture of the risks.

As for the old blood, I can't tell you. If you go to a doctor, he can probably help. As for discharge of different consistencies, it is normal for a woman to have this. When she's not fertile, the discharge will be white. When she is, it will be transparent, slippery, and stretch like a raw egg white. If there is no bad odor, it might be OK.

Good luck, and please let me know how you do.

QUESTION: but why still dried blood?
And why am I still getting a positive on the pregnancy test?
I was wrong, I was only 6 weeks at most into the pregnancy.
But is has been 5 weeks since the abortion!
Could I be pregnant again??

Answer
Sam,

I don't know what is going on with you. You will have to see a doctor to get some answers. If you remember when you had sex, you can test for pregnancy about three weeks later.

Nobody can really answer this question over the internet, not even a doctor. You need to be examined. I wish I could ease your fears, but I can't give you the answers you seek. Only a doctor you see in person can do that.

I hope you will be OK. If you ARE pregnant again, please don't have another abortion. Abortions are dangerous, and could kill you or do serious injury. And when a woman gets into a cycle of repeat abortions, the damage just mounts. The only way to get out of the cycle is to either be unable to conceive anymore at all, carry the baby to term, or stop having sex.

Please keep me informed. Take care.
