Mifeprex & Abortion: Understanding Your Options & Potential Outcomes

Question
I had taken the pill Mifeprex two days ago and now I am having second thoughts about the abortion process.  I was wondering if I can still have the baby. I have not taken the four pills Misoprostol yet.  I am suppose to insert those into my vagina.  Then that is when I will start bleeding and cramping.  I was also wondering if the baby would still be heathy.

Answer
Hi, Samantha,

There is a chance that your baby can be saved. Please go immediately to this web site, and CALL them:

http://www.pregnancycenters.org/

They need to put you in touch with a local organization that can refer you to a doctor, or you may also be able to find your local organization and call them directly. Let me know if you are unable to get anywhere; I have some other ideas. I do check my email several times a day, so if you get this fairly soon, and write back, there is a good chance I will be able to answer tonight.

If a good doctor will give you progesterone treatments, throughout pregnancy, this may help. Also, if you took the pills at the wrong time, it may not have had any effect anyway, so you can always hope. How far along were/are you?

It is also a very good thing that you didn't use the Misoprostol as recommended, for several reasons. One is that if a woman puts them into her vagina, she can die from toxic shock syndrome. Another reason is that they can cause contractions so severe that they will rupture a woman's uterus, and they can also cause a woman to bleed to death. The manufacturer specifically says they should never be given to a pregnant woman. I'm still finding it hard to believe that people in the United States are still giving this advice! They really ought to know better. Regardless, you may well have saved your own life as well.

If for some reason your baby WAS harmed, you may have a miscarriage, and you will have to watch and talk to a doctor about making sure you passed everything. But we can hope and pray your baby is OK. Please let me know how it goes, and I will pray for you.
