Running & Muscle Tightness: Glutes, Hamstrings & IT Band - Causes & Solutions
QuestionI started running last year and with infrequent runs, this did not bother me but now this year I am adding more mileage and each time I go run, does not matter it is short run like 4m or long run 10 m(feel more here though), my glutes, hamstrings and IT band would tighten up - not cramp or pain - just tight that I have to stop and stretch and continue and afterwards it feels sore. I go to a chiropractor but he only aligns - so I am prepping for a half m and this annoying pain - I would like to find out why. Any suggestions?
AnswerHi Bo,
From the sounds of it you aren't stretching properly. Try going to get a massage on your legs with the main focus being your glutes, hams, and IT band. Massage can release the muscle easier than a stretch can. DO NOT run the day you get a massage. Your body will need a day of rest. The day after however you are fine to go back to training. When the IT band tightens up it is harder to stretch because most of it tendon. Tendons are not meant to stretch. Therefore they are harder to release. The muscle part of the IT band is located in the glutes. Be prepared that you more than likely will experience bruising on the IT band. It is one of those things that is hard to avoid. Going to a sports massage therapist is probably your best option as well. Let me know if you need anything else. Good luck!
