Back Pain & Irritation: Herniated Disc vs. Other Causes

Question
QUESTION: Hello,
I have a spot on my back that sometimes feels itchy, tingling, and irritated but no rash. Could this be a pinched nerve?
If so is there anything I can do for it..

ANSWER: Thanks for your question!

You did not mention precisely where this spot on your back is so I'll take a guess. If its somewhere along the spine its unlikely that you have a 'pinched nerve'. The term I'll be using is herniated disc which causes plenty of pain in the back running to down to 1 or both legs when in the acute phase. It does NOT include itching, tingling and irritation.
Is this spot relieved by pressure? Is it a muscle spasm? is it along the line of underwear (the elastic part of it) or brassiere? You also did not mention your approximate age and how long you have been suffering from this discomfort. Sciatica Pain (low back pain radiating down to one or both legs is not usually localised in one spot.

One other thing If its itchy, check you blood sugar levels (Test called FBG and HbA1C) Fasting blood glucose to eliminate diabetes. Itching in the groin areas and thirst during the night could be symptoms of a high blood sugar levels.

If you could answer the questions above, I could be able to answer you better.

Kind regards
Jeremy

QUESTION: The spot is upper to mid right shoulder, seems to itch more and tingling sometimes almost a burning sensation after doing physical labor, shoveling snow etc. Blood Glucose is fine..

Answer
OK...that's better. What you have is a very common muscular spasm usually caused by overworking a particular muscle. In your case it could be a mixture of the sub-scapularis and trapezius muscle. A good massage therapist will be familiar in treating the area with finger massage (Petrissage)
Although when pressed on the exact spot and rotated in gentle circles with the thumb could cause some discomfort, the pain will become bearable and relief would be felt. This type of muscular pain usually passes in about 2-4 months untreated but its constant burning sensation can be mildly debilitating and the sufferer is known to never find a comfortable position to sit, sleep or stand.
I've just got one last thing which I usually consider good news. No, its not a pinched nerve!!
