Reflexology & Metal Implants: Understanding Contraindications
QuestionHi, I'm about halfway though a clinical reflexology course. Just started my case studies and today had a client with a previous knee surgery (2008). She had 2 screws in her left leg. I went ahead with treatment on this client but my tutor thinks the screws are a contraindication and so I can't use this as a case study. Do you agree with this? My tutor is also interested to know if this is correct or not as she has always turned away clients with metal implants. Thanks, kate
AnswerHi Kate!
If the surgery was last month I'd agree with your tutor, but 3 years ago? You can't do anything with reflexology that would be any harder on your clients knees than walking or running is. If you are concerned or the client has pain with movement, just don't jostle the lower legs and cause strain on the knee joints. Simple thumb pressure and foot manipulations should present no issues for knee implants if you bolster carefully.
Best Wishes!
