Kriya Massage: Contraindications & Resources for Massage Therapy Students

Question
I am a Massage Therapy student and am doing a project on Kriya Massage. I have not been able to find any contraindications to this modality could you help me with this? Also are there any books on the subject?

Answer
Hi Anne

I began my training in Kriya massage in 1994 and later began teaching Kriya in 2003 at DoveStar than later independently.

As far as my experiences with Kriya contraindications there are none that I have ever known about.

Kriya massage was named by Kamala St.Germain owner of DoveStar Institute www.dovestar.edu sometime in the early 70's. However Roberta DeLong Miller author of Psychic Massage (ISBN 0-06-090353-8) wrote a book in 1975 nearly describing Kriya massage perfectly. The book is out of print, however it still is available through Amazon.com

Kriya also has its origins from Kriya yoga and roots in Ayurveda massage. There are many similarities relative to the philosophy of Ayurveda and Kriya. The only difference is Kriya utilizes room temperature oils while Ayurvedic utilizes heated oils.

Kriya also shares philosophies and techniques with Lomi Lomi Hawaiian massage.

My wife and I have had overwhelming response to this modality in our practice. Kriya is preferred 9 times out of 10 from clients that have received both swedish and Kriya massage.

To your success

John Nickolas
