Massage Contraindications: When to Avoid Massage

Question
Dear Brandy,
Could you possibly enlighten me as to why massaging varicose veins, bruising and oedema(swelling?)is contraindicated please?
I'm assuming it's because it stops clotting, could be painful and could damage vein valves, but I would like to be sure.

Thanks so much,  Amber.

Answer
Hello Amber,

Generally it is safe to massage when varicose veins are present, but massage should be avoided if the varicose veins are swollen or painful. A trained therapist should give a regular massage from the feet up the legs and to the hip. This will increase mobilization and reduce swelling in the veins, but do not put direct pressure on the varicose veins.

A bruise is caused from a blunt impact where the capillaries are damaged which can be painful to touch.

I would advise to have a written approval from a doctor before massaging a person with edema. Massage is beneficial for reducing swelling in the tissues, but if blood clots are present massage should be avoided.

Have a great day!

Brandy
