QuestionAre there any contraindications for 60+ year old person,on dialysis, to receive massages?
AnswerHi Libby,
Yes,
Clients receiving dialysis require doctors approval before receiving any form of massage.
There are many physiological variables that determine if massage will benefit your client, however this is beyond the scope of practice for LMTs to determine.
In the event the MD gives the OK, I would approach with light effleurage and an all natural massage oil like almond or jojoba. (organic would be best)
Because the skin absorbs the oils, then into the lymph, then directly into the bloodstream the kidneys would need to filter anything that may be an issue.
With a client who already has challenges with their kidney functions this could cause unnecessary stress, massage now becomes counterproductive.
An alternative treatment that would benefit the client is receiving a Reiki treatment or similar energy based modalities, as they induce relaxation without muscle or tissue stimulation.
