Acetone for Natural Nails: Benefits & Risks - A Comprehensive Guide
Questionwhat are the advantages or disadvantages there might be to using 100% acetone on my natural nails. thanks
AnswerHi Susan,
With regards to 100% Acetone. The advantage would be a speedy removal of nail polish versus the little bit more of effort required by non-acetone (not that huge a difference). However it is very drying and if you change your polish frequently, it will dry out the nails. "Dry" nails become brittle and will be more prone to breakage and/or peeling.
Having said that, I advise that you use cuticle oil at least 2 times a day (4 is better). EVEN IF you are not using 100% acetone. You apply it at the cuticle and massage it into the cuticle and then down the surface of the nail. This will nourish it and decrease dryness, help prevent breakage due to increased flexibility of the natural nail. I advise this to all my clients whether they have natural nails or enhancements and no matter what kind of remover they are using. It's beneficial in every way. A good habit is to leave it next to your toothpaste and then use it every time you brush your teeth.
Also, use rubber gloves whenever washing dishes or doing household cleaning. Over exposure to water and cleaning products OF ANY KIND will dehydrate the nail and make it prone to breakage as well.
There are some 'myths' that pure acetone is harmful and will damage kidneys etc.. This is recently proven as untrue in the case of using it for removal of nail polish.
I hope this helps
Best regards
