What Ingredient in Nail Base Coat Ensures Polish Adhesion?

hi i have my exams tomorrow and i need an answer ASAP if possible!!
here is the question! What ingredient is found in base coat that makes the nail polish stick to it?
i have looked every where for the answer and cant find it anywhere please help?!?!?

I wish I could answer this question!! What a great thing to wonder about.
Each polish company has their own formulation, so I am sure that there is no one ingredient that is the "magic" chemical.
