Silk Nail Fills: Drying Time, Longevity & Professional vs. DIY
QuestionI had my silk nails put on by a professional in the town where I live. The nail polish took a very long time to dry and got messed up 3 hours after I had them done. How long should I sit under the dryer to let the polish set? Does the polish on silk nails always take that long to dry? Or, could it be the polish that they have?
Also, what is the difference between getting them filled by the shop where I got them done and somewhere else? Does it matter whether or not the other salon does silk? Or, does it need to be done at a salon that does silk nails?
AnswerThe best way to fill silk wraps is with wraps. The actual mesh can be silk or fiberglass-- that part won't matter. They can be filled with acrylic, but I have had no luck filling wraps with gel-- the gel simply does not stick to the resin used for the wraps.
Polish should never take 3 hours to dry. Standard polish with a quality topcoat should be smudge proof within half an hour-- tops. As little as 5 minutes under a drying unit is usually sufficient to prevent most smudges. I'm guessing they weren't using a good topcoat.
