Arm Hair for Women: Social Norms & Personal Choice
QuestionAre girls supposed to shave their forearms? I was always told that nobody cares about arm hair, but last year, when I went to the nail parlor for prom, the salon lady asked if my arm hair bothers me. I told her that it didn't. Since then, I have noticed that some other girls with dark hair don't have any arm hair, and now I'm a little paranoid about it. Would it be socially acceptable to leave it or should it be shaved off? Thanks. --Erin
Answer You can remove it if it bothers you. I know a lot of women of Indian/Mediterranean descent shave or wax theirs because it's dark and they find it embarrassing. If it doesn't bother you don't worry about it. I have waxed mine off a few times, it does feel nice and smooth, but my arm hair doesn't bother me enough where I worry about it. I had a friend in middle school who shaved her armhair and said it grew back darker, technically I've learned that's not possible, but when you shave you cut the hair at an angle. making it stubbly so it'll seem darker and thicker. That's why I I still recommend waxing it over shaving, that way it will grow back less and less.
