Acne & Blemishes: Safe Removal & Understanding Skin Concerns

Question
hello there.i'm dee, 18 years old.

well, um. i actually have a lot of questions (i hope that's okay)..so here it goes... :)

1. before i go to sleep i touch my face and feel if there are little bumps on it. usually i feel hard little bumps, which i guess, are pimples. then i try to remove them by softly tubbing them. my question is, is that okay? i mean, will rubbing them (to remove them) only make it worse?

2. sometimes when i look at the mirror, i see hard, white things, which i guess (again) are hard pimples. i remove them using my thumb and index hand. my problem is that after i remove them, i notice tiny crater-like holes on my face. it really bugs me 'cause after they heal, dark spots appear. what can i do from preventing and curing dark spots?

3. i have whiteheads on my nose, which are really annoying. i use antibacterial soap, but it only makes my face dry. what should i do?

4. i have blackheads on both sides of my nose (i think they're called ala). they bother me a lot 'cause they look like tiny hair, growing beside my nose. what should i do to remove them?

(uhh. just some information about what i eat. i hope this helps.)
i drink 4-5 cups of water a day. i don't eat salty food very much, but i eat sweets a lot. i eat chocolate almost every after meals. i eat banana and papaya twice to thrice a week. i don't really like fish very much. i eat fish once or twice a week.

i really hope you can help me. thank you vm.:)

Answer
Dear Dee~

1)  Yes, rubbing your face and touchimg your face transfers bacteria from your hands to your face and will add to your skin breakouts.
2) Bacteria settling into and clogging pores is a major cause of blackheads and white heads.  Proper cleansing with an exfoliating cleanser twice daily (such as Olay Smooth Skin Exfoliating Scrub) can make a huge difference. Whiteheads and blackheads should be removed with an exfoliating scrub used regularly, not by trying to pop them with your fingers. There are several products available to lighten dark spots on your skin.  Just stay away from anything with Hydroquinone as the active ingredient.  Meladerm is a good one to try.
3) Question #3 is answered above in my response to question #2.
4) Question #4 is answered above in my response to question #2.

Chocolate could definitely be contributing to your skin breakouts.  Any fatty foods are going to contribute to breakouts at your age.  Try to avoid fatty foods as much as possible.  Chips, fries, etc., will all contribute to breakouts.  But, using an exfoliating scrub facial cleanser on a daily basis should result in much improved skin.

Also, try and up your water intake to 8 glasses/day.  That should help clear up your skin as well.
