Balancing Speed and Quality in Haircuts: A Barber's Dilemma

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I recently open a shop and it is doing pretty well, but the only problem i'm having is when 3 or 4 customers come in a one time, i seem to go faster. I love cuttin, and i like doing a good job, so do you choose quality work over quantity. help me out here. i dont like speed cuttin, but i be trying to get them out of there.

ANSWER: Hello Pat, that is a good question. It is a issue with different Barbers some prefer to take their time and make sure the job is perfect. I personally do not believe in a perfect haircut. I can do just as good if not better job in 10 mins as a barber do in 1 hour. and when you work in a busy shop with multiple barbers you want to get the most cuts so at the end of the day your pockets is fatter. We just got rid of a barber who likes to take his time he would spend any where from 45 mins-1 1/2 hour on one head and started complaining that he was not making enough to pay his booth rent but in reality it was his fault the time it would take him to finish one head I'll be starting my 3rd or 4th. Also When I first started in a shop an older barber would always stress to me speed is important some people have things to do a lot of people that come to my shop come in on their lunch break or is just impatient. But remember You have your own style of cutting do what you do, if your cuts are outstanding, above the rest then people will come to see you and will be willing to wait just for you! :)

QUESTION: Thanks for the advice and also i like to take 5 minutes in between cuts to clean tools, u got to keep your equipment clean, some customers like me because of my cleaniness. The other question i had was, could u share with me how to do walk-ins and do appointments, i run a 1 barber shop, I don't do appointments now, but i was considering it but i think it is unfair to let someone walk in and get in a chair when people have been waiting for a 1 or so, i thought about a sign in sheet as long as they come back before its their time, to keep people from waiting, what do u think?

Answer
Yes you must keep your tools sanitized you don't want to spread anything to anybody. As far as your schedules right now if you just opened you will probably be ok but eventually you will need help, walk ins has to wait their turn you take them in order that they come in unless they have an appointment for example if you are cutting someone and it is 3:45 and you have a person come in during that cut but you also have a 4:15 coming the person who is a walk in must wait until after the 4:15 is done but once you are done apologize to the walk in for the wait remember you don't want to loose ANY customers. In my shop we mainly do walk-ins first come first serve! Hope this helps any more questions feel free to ask!
