Marquise cut diamond has obtained its name from the Marquise of Pompadour. King Louis XIV of France had instructed his court jeweler to create a stone which resembled the smile of his beautiful mistress.
"Naiveté" Cut Diamond Guidelines:
Color and Clarity: As the shape of Marquise appear large, the color and clarity of the diamond is important. It reflects the appearance of the diamond. The color and clarity in case of this diamond is apparent. The diamond may appear slightly dark towards the points; hence, high grades are to be preferred to make it look its best.
Size: The Naiveté cut diamonds look large from the face up position. Usually Marquise cuts are 10mm long X 6mm wide approximately.
Table percent: The table percent should be between 53 – 63 percent. The length lowers than 50 and higher than 70 percent looks poor in quality.
Depth: Ideally, the depth for a high quality cut is between 59 and 63 percent.
Girdle: Extremely thin or thick girdle thickness diamonds are to be avoided.
Length to width ratio: Ideally, for a high quality Marquise cut, the length of the diamond has to be 1.75 to 2.25 of its width.
