Essential Baby Medications: A Parent's Preparedness Guide

Being prepared and having the necessary supplies well-stocked can really avoid your last minute runs to the pharmacy on hand. Some common baby ailments such as, rashes, fevers, and other ailments as well requires some essential baby medications to have on hand to handle the ins and outs of daily baby care.

1.Baby Pain and Fever Medication Tylenol/Motrin/Tempra

These medications are really good to have on hand in the case of a fever. But on that note, make sure you have a thermometer for when teething pain starts to become a problem. Infant Motrin (ibuprofin) is especially good for acute teething episodes or night time issues. It lasts longer than Tempra/Tylenol, typically from 6-8 hours, so you’re more likely to get through a good amount of the night compared to Tylenol.

2.Saline Drops And A Nasal Aspirator

Saline drops used with a nasal aspirator may overcome the problem of nasal congestion, mainly in the early stages when even a little bit of baby snot causes frustration for them during breastfeeding or for colds.
 
3.Calamine Lotion/Hydrocortisone Ointment
 
Some kind of anti-itch cream is helpful to cure rashes or eczema. 0.5% Hydrocortisone is available over the counter and is useful for treating eczema. Many eczema care cream are really effective if you want to avoid steroid creams. The plain calamine is recommended for itching/irritation in children and you can apply lots of it.

4.Gripe Water/Oval

To address colic or just gas in general, it is convenient to have something on hand. Gripe water, which is all natural, is also good to stop hiccups, so use it a few times when your baby hiccups are persistent. Ensure you buy an alcohol-free version such as the Kolik brand. Kolik brand gripe water has some essential properties that it can even settle hiccups! However, Ovol is considered to be better than gripe water due to its long-term use.

5.Children’s Benadryl
 
An anti-histamine mediation is very useful if your child experiences an allergic reaction such as hives. A First Aid instructor also recommends having this on hand in your home, to take out some extra time in the case of a severe allergic reaction.

6.Vitamin D Drops

For exclusively breastfed babies, your physician will likely tell you to give your baby a daily dose of Vitamin D.

7.Children’s Polysporin
 
For minor cuts and scuffs, this antibiotic cream comes in handy. Use it a few times when your baby ears cracks.
Though, you must consult your pediatrician or health care provider before giving medications to your child. These are the items you should purchase in advance, to stock up your medicine cabinet and to avoid any emergency.
