Preparing and Sealing Water Buffalo Horn for Jewelry Making - Expert Advice

Question
Heya Peter! I recently ordered and received a large water buffalo horn. I'm looking to make some jewelry out it. Simple shapes and maybe some tunnels. Any advice or resources for properly preparing the horn and sealing it? I've heard wood working lacquer but I thought I'd ask you, the expert, first

Answer
Hey Steve,

Working wit horn is quite simple.
I would try a studio design jeweller, or even someone studying jewellery at a college....
I've never heard about sealing horn, when I was working it, I'd shape it and clean it up - which was a bit like working wood - and then polish it up.

The pieces that I made for friends 20+ years ago, are still shiny and being used or worn.

Hope that helps.

Maybe try some knife makers. If you're in the US I think you'll find a whole society of knife makers / magazines etc.

Hope this is of assistance.

Cheers, P
